Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 September 2026
This website (www.unpopularpeople.com) and the Unpopular People podcast are run by Ben Fein and Elisa Fein, Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand, as a private, non-commercial project. We take your privacy seriously and handle personal information in line with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and what your rights are. If you have any questions, email us at info@unpopularpeople.com.
The short version
We don’t use cookies, analytics or advertising on this website, and we never sell or rent personal information. The only personal information we collect is what you choose to send us through the contact or newsletter form, or what our podcast guests share with us for their episode.
What we collect and why
Contact form. When you use the contact form we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to reply to you. Messages are delivered to our mailbox by a form-delivery service (Web3Forms) and stored in our email account, and we keep them only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.
Newsletter. If you sign up for our newsletter we store your name and email address to send you occasional news about the podcast. We don’t send the newsletter on behalf of anyone else. You can unsubscribe at any time by emailing info@unpopularpeople.com, and we will delete your details.
Podcast guests. If you are a guest on the podcast, we record our conversation and publish it together with your name, your story and, if you provide one, a photo. We do this only with your agreement. You can ask us at any time to change or remove your episode page or the episode itself.
Visiting the website. We don’t set cookies and we don’t run analytics. The website is served by Cloudflare, our hosting provider, which automatically processes technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested in order to deliver the site securely and protect it from attacks. This data is handled under Cloudflare’s privacy policy; we don’t receive or keep visitor logs ourselves.
Embedded podcast players. Episode pages contain players embedded from Buzzsprout and Podbean, the services that host our audio. When you press play, these services receive your IP address and may set their own cookies. Their privacy policies apply: Buzzsprout, Podbean.
Links to other platforms. Our site links to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and other websites. Once you follow such a link, the privacy policy of that platform applies. We are not responsible for their content or practices.
Where your information is stored
The service providers we rely on – Cloudflare (hosting), Web3Forms (form delivery), Spaceship/Spacemail (email), Buzzsprout and Podbean (audio hosting) – may store data on servers outside New Zealand. We only use established providers that commit to privacy safeguards comparable to those of the Privacy Act 2020.
How we protect it
Your information is stored in password-protected accounts and transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Access is limited to the two of us. When we no longer need personal information for the purpose it was collected for, we delete it.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to ask us what personal information we hold about you, to ask for it to be corrected, and to ask for it to be deleted. To do so, email info@unpopularpeople.com; we will respond within 20 working days and will not charge a fee. If you are not satisfied with how we handle your request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at www.privacy.org.nz. If you live outside New Zealand, you may also have rights under your local privacy laws, and we will honour reasonable requests in the same way.
Children
This website and podcast are not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
